LC Tech FILERECOVERY Professional Review – Can It Compete with Modern Recovery Tools?
Out of 5 Total Score
No. 12 Among all Windows solutions
FILERECOVERY Professional is a feature-rich data recovery tool designed to recover all types of lost or deleted data. But, seeing as it hasn’t received an update in quite some time, can its recovery abilities hold up when recovering modern file formats? Or, is it simply another recovery tool that will gradually fall by the wayside? Find out in this FILERECOVERY Professional review.
Main Pros and Cons of FILERECOVERY® Professional

FILERECOVERY® Professional Summary
While it would be objectively incorrect to say that FILERECOVERY Professional doesn’t have a lot to offer its users, we aren’t prepared to scream from the rooftops about how good it is. Starting with some of its strengths, it has the notable ability to recognize a number of file systems and recover data using a range of methods. It also includes some useful backup tools for working with disks that are in a corrupted or damaged state. It works best at recovering raw photos and documents by file signature, but it also does a good job of recovering recently deleted files from select file systems.
However, in most areas, it fails to impress to a level where you can confidently purchase it without some well-thought-out consideration. Its user interface is very outdated and caters more to novice users than recovery professionals. Likewise, we found that its recovery results were fairly mediocre, perhaps because the software hadn’t received an update in a while.
For the price, there are other up-to-date data recovery tools that can deliver similar or better results. But, in the few areas where FILERECOVERY Professional does excel, it’s definitely worth trying out using the free trial.

How to Use FILERECOVERY® Professional
Tested on: Windows 11 (version 23H2)
With a basic grasp on the software, let’s now take a look at what it looks like to recover data using FILERECOVERY Professional. We’ve included some steps below, along with some screenshots, to illustrate the first-hand experience.
Installation
Installing FILERECOVERY Professional is very straightforward. The download file is easy to find on the website and the installation process only involves accepting the software's EULA, choosing an installation location, and creating a desktop shortcut.
The first time the software is opened, you will either need to run the software in Evaluation mode or input your Activation Code.
Source selection
FILERECOVERY Professional uses a wizard-style recovery process where it guides you through what type of device you're recovering data from, which disk or volume you want to scan, and which scan types you'd like to perform.
At the source selection screen (Step 2), you have the option of creating or loading an image file if you don't want to scan the disk directly; useful if your storage device is unstable.
Scanning process
You have a few different scan types to choose from, including Deleted File Recovery, Formatted Media Recovery, Search Lost Volumes, Disk Diagnostics, and Disk Tools. At the bottom, you can choose which file systems to search for (not all are enabled by default) and what algorithms to use.
For professionals, this guided process might be a bit tedious, as there's no way to define the scan parameters on one screen and start scanning. The next page will give you a summary of the options you've chosen and then begin the scan.
Managing found files
Once the scan is complete, your data will be broken down in a tree view on the left, with the main window showing you a list of your files. Using the tree view, you can navigate the restored file structure if one is found. Otherwise, you can explore the folders based on file format.
The scan results can be viewed in a thumbnail view for easier recovery of photos. Unfortunately, though, there are no filtering options to help search through large amounts of data, nor is there any indication of which data has the best chance of recovery.
Recovery and post-processing
To recover a file, select it and then click Save (or right-click and click Save as). To select a group of files, you must use Shift + Left-click to select them all. Or, you can select several files by clicking on each while holding Ctrl. It's not possible to select multiple files that reside in different folders. In this case, you will need to recover each set of data from the directory they're located in.
Once recovery has started, a window displaying the recovery progress will appear, along with the estimated time remaining. Once done, a final window will appear listing the results.

Avg score FILERECOVERY Professional is safe and trustworthy
No malware was flagged in our scans.
The company does collect and share some data.
Its ability to recover data intact is so-so.
LC Technology International, Inc. is a trusted company.
There is nothing of high concern to report regarding FILERECOVERY Professional's safety and trustworthiness. We performed a full malware scan of the software which came back completely clean. Users should be aware that the software does collect and share some data with third parties, but only when required to service a request (such as payments or order fulfillment). The program does not utilize non-intrusive read-only algorithms, so users must keep that in mind if they want to prioritize the safety of their data while using the application.
FILERECOVERY® Professional - Full Review and Analysis
As part of our review, we’ve taken a very close look at FILERECOVERY Professional and evaluated it according to a standardized set of criteria that we use to measure each recovery tool. Here is how the program performed in our tests.
Karma
12 rating criteria
The Karma score evaluates how well the company maintains the tool and what sort of support options are available to customers. The program performed pretty poorly in this regard, as it hasn’t been updated in years and doesn’t contain a changelog with the updates it receives. The company isn’t generally well-known either, despite its age and history of working with prominent companies in the technology industry.
A starting guide is available for the software, but it does little more than provide step-by-step instructions. For support, you have the option of reaching out by phone, sending them an email, or starting a live chat during the hours that they are available.

The demo version of the software can be downloaded for free, which lets you scan your drive and recover up to 80 KB of data. The full version allows unlimited recovery and includes free upgrades.
It would be difficult to say that its recovery abilities are relative to its price. There are more affordable options that can do more. But, it wasn’t the worst, even if with its subscription-based pricing model.

Usability
18 rating criteria
The program has a lot to improve on in terms of usability. Its outdated user interface is very basic and doesn’t offer smooth navigation. Because it exclusively relies on a wizard-like recovery process, jumping between different sections can be a pain. Searching through the recovery results can also be difficult due to the lack of filtering options and view modes.
To get access to all of its features, you must first enable Expert Mode in the program’s options. The program does include a hex view for experts and the results do have some very basic sorting options.

Recovery performance
122 rating criteria
The recovery performance of FILERECOVERY Professional is just mediocre, likely due to the fact that it’s no longer actively maintained. Even though it does include a range of scanning algorithms, much of them are lackluster with only a few good results here and there.
It has the ability to scan FAT, exFAT, NTFS, HFS+, and EXT2/3 file systems, as well as ISO9660 for optical media, which is a rare sight to see. In addition to the ability to recover data by file signature, you can also search for lost partitions and perform disk diagnostics.

Feeling puzzled by terms like "Quick scan" and "Deep scan"? This link explains the different scan modes and their specific purposes.
FILERECOVERY Professional supports a good range of file systems. The only common file systems it doesn’t support at all are APFS and EXT4 (although it does support EXT2/3). When it comes to recovering files that have been emptied from Recycle Bin or deleted using Shift + Delete, it produced great results when doing so from FAT32 and NTFS partitions. It had some trouble with doing the same from exFAT, EXT2/3, and HFS+ partitions, as much of our data remained undiscovered or was recovered without the original folder structure.
If you’re trying to recover data following the loss or format of your file system, FILERECOVERY Professional may not be the most confident choice. It failed to recover most of our data intact. Of the data it did manage to recover from our exFAT partition, all of the files that were recovered had the wrong checksum.
In instances where your file system is damaged or completely unusable, the program has a decent chance of recovering the files by signature. But, its success is tied to what you’re recovering. It has the best chance of recovering raw photos and documents, with the overall results being quite similar. For photos, it was great at recovering JPG, KDC, MOS, ORF, and SR2 with ease. It had similar success with the document file types DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, and PDF. Videos are where it’s lagging behind, as it could recover AVI and MOV formats to a high degree but nothing else.

The option of scanning for lost partitions is useful, especially considering it’s available as its own scan mode. Partial file recovery is also possible if you want to recover data that can be repaired, and the built-in option to create and scan disk images is useful in a range of data loss scenarios.
Because the tool is no longer updated, it doesn’t support many modern file formats. Furthermore, its scanning algorithms aren’t optimized to use the latest and most up-to-date methods for finding data. The program does support drives encrypted with BitLocker, but only once it is unlocked by the user.

FILERECOVERY Professional can recover data from internal and external hard disk and solid-state drives, USB flash drives, and memory cards. Should the file system of your disk become corrupted, it can also scan raw disks. For technical users who need to recover data from a RAID array, you can do so with the application so long as your RAID has a built-in controller.
iOS and Android devices are not supported at this time, nor is the ability to recover data from NAS devices or remote systems.

The application includes some additional recovery features that are worth mentioning, as they complement the recovery process. For instance, you can create full disk images within the application in times when scanning the drive directly may cause more harm than good. It can identify and mark bad sectors, as well as reconstruct a limited number of old RAID configurations.
Seeing as the company also has its own in-lab data recovery service, an option is provided to customers who aren’t confident in their ability to recover the data themselves or want to entrust the recovery of their data to a professional. In terms of scan speed, the program averaged between 50 to 100 MB/s. Not the fastest scan speeds out there, but certainly still faster than some.
Extras
10 rating criteria
In an effort to provide as much value to the customer as possible, some data recovery tools include extras alongside data recovery. While not absolutely necessary, we do consider what extra features a software tool comes with to make it stand out from the crowd.

9 | Disk surface test | Yes | The program can scan your disk and find bad sectors. |
10 | Secure data shredding | Yes | You can erase files from the drive so they cannot be recovered. |
As the software can read S.M.A.R.T. data and recognize bad sectors, it’s useful in situations where you don’t want to download a separate tool to get an overview of your drive health. Disk cloning is another useful feature that’s included, as it lets you quickly and easily move all of the data from one drive to another.
Pros: The software scan was a little over an hour, but we were happy as we were still able to access our computer and work while the scan ran. We did not have to stop working on the computer like most recovery software makes us do.
Cons: My department was able to use this product once for a deep scan and locating documents saved on the eternal hard drive. That was the one and only time we were approved to use as the product was charged for one deep scan.

However, what FileRecovery does do, it does very well. In our tests, the software quickly found a large number of deleted files and was able to recover them successfully.
Ken Feinstein (cnet.com)
With a simple, easy-to-understand interface, LC Technology FileRecovery for Windows effectively scours your disk, recovering these mislaid files if they're still available. Best of all, there's no need to purchase the software in advance of an accident; the almost fully functional demo version is available as a free download and includes free telephone support.

Video Resources for FILERECOVERY® Professional: Tutorials and Helpful Guides
To help you better understand how FILERECOVERY® Professional for Windows works, we’ve put together a collection of useful tutorials and other video resources.
Bottom line
FILERECOVERY Professional is a mixed bag. On one hand, it does have some qualities that make it a useful recovery tool, like support for a wide range of file systems, the ability to reconstruct RAID arrays, and the byte-to-byte imaging and disk cloning features. On the other hand, it doesn’t receive the attention it deserves to compete with other modern data recovery tools, especially when it comes to recovering data.
Upon testing all of its recovery methods, we found that it excelled in recovering recently deleted data from FAT32 and NTFS partitions and was able to recognize a large number of raw photo and document file formats. However, it had some hiccups when trying to retrieve data that was lost following the loss or format of a file system. Likewise, it displayed very poor support for video formats.
In our opinion, the price is just a little bit too high for what you get. Because it uses a subscription-based licensing model, it becomes an even less appealing option when you consider the fact that it hasn’t received an update in over a year. Nonetheless, it does have the opportunity to shine when used in a situation that it’s best suited for. And, the additional features it includes make it easier to justify the purchase if you feel that you would get regular use out of them.
