Wondershare Recoverit for Mac is a good choice for those looking to recover lost or deleted video files thanks to its dedicated video search mode and video repair capabilities. The process of recovering and repairing lost videos is nearly effortless thanks to the application’s simple, modern user interface, and the high scanning speed means that even large quantities of video files can be quickly located and restored.
However, Wondershare Recoverit also has several downsides that make it a less than ideal choice for regular data recovery. One of the biggest issues with Recoverit is that it can’t perform a full disk scan, only individual volumes. Additionally, it doesn’t display corrupted data among recoverable files, so it might mislead you into thinking that your data is gone for good even though it could be merely corrupted.
During our testing, scans failed on several occasions, forcing us to start over from scratch. In fact, we sometimes had to start from scratch even when the scan hadn’t failed, due to the software’s poor scan session management. Still, the overall recovery rate and file type support were both good, so the software is certainly worth a try even though it can recover only 100 MB of data for free.

Installation
You can download a free version of Recoverit that can recover up to 100 MB of data for free on its official website, but only if you visit a specific landing page. The free version that's available on the home page can only preview recoverable files.
The Reecoverit installer is very small because it downloads the necessary application files during the installation process. As such, it's impossible to install Recoverit without a working internet connection.
When the installation ends, the installer automatically opens the Recoverit website in a web browser, which can be quite annoying, especially if you're doing other things on your computer.
Source selection
Recoverit automatically lists all available volumes on the main screen, allowing you to start a scan with a simple click. Unfortunately, there's no way to scan an entire storage device and all of its volumes in one go. You can always scan only one volume at a time.
Included among available sources are several folders where users frequently look for deleted files, including Trash and Desktop. Recoverit makes it seem as if it can look for lost files only in these folders, but that's not true—it always scans the entire volume.
Scanning process
It doesn't take much time for Recoverit to scan even a fairly large storage device, but that's something you won't know until the software is done scanning because it doesn't provide any time estimate.
The only thing Recoverit does show during scanning is a percentage indicator, but its accuracy is questionable considering how erratically it behaves sometimes, quickly reaching 50% only to take much longer to reach 100%.
Managing found files
By default, Recoverit presents recoverable files in icon view. You can switch to list view and detail view to display more information about each file. Older versions didn't make it possible to sort recoverable files in list view, but this issue has been fixed.
Some file formats, such as JPG, PNG, and GIF images or MP4 videos, can be previewed directly in Recoverit. To see only specific file types, you can activate file type filters.
Overall, the file management experience is pleasant but somewhat less flexible than we would like it to be. The modern design of the user interface does make up for it to a degree.
Recovery and post-processing
To complete a recovery job with Recoverit, you need to select the files you want to recover, click the Recover button, and then specify the recovery directory. The software will remind you not to recover your files to the location where they were originally stored to avoid overwriting them. Once your files are recovered, you can click the Open Folder button to view them in Finder.

It’s clear that Wondershare put a lot of thought and effort into the design of the application’s user interface, but there are a few quite important commissions that bring the overall user experience down. While scan results displayed in list view can be sorted, they can’t be mounted as a virtual disk. There’s also the fact that Recoverit doesn’t support dark mode, which, while not really important, is something that even casual Mac users can easily notice and be bothered with. Last but not least, the software doesn’t automatically detect a newly connected storage device, and it waits for manual confirmation before it resumes an interrupted scan.

Wondershare Recoverit for Mac’s recovery performance is best when recovering NTFS partitions, but it falls short when it comes to FAT32 and exFAT partitions. The software can also recover recently deleted files from HFS+ and APFS partitions, but only if they haven’t been formatted or extensively corrupted, which is unfortunately considering that those are the partitions Mac users rely on the most.
Despite its focus on video recovery and repair, Wondershare Recoverit doesn’t support as many video file signatures as one would expect. Formats such as ARI, ARX, BRAW, and MXF are absent from its recovery capabilities. The software’s support for photo and document file signatures is similarly patchy, lacking comprehensive coverage for formats like ERF, JP2, RW2, X3F, DJVU, among others. Clearly, the software’s claims of supporting over 1,000 file formats are not based in reality.

Recoverit can scan mounted disk images, but it can’t turn a storage device into an image for safer recovery of lost data. When the software encounters lost partitions, it doesn’t label them as clearly as it should, making it difficult to know which partition belongs to which storage device. We were also disappointed to find out that Wondershare Recoverit is unable to recover data from local Time Machine snapshots, which are created automatically in the absence of your Time Machine backup disk.

You can use Wondershare Recoverit to get back data from all commonly used internal and external storage devices. iOS and Android smartphones are not supported, but most other data recovery software applications for Mac don’t support them as well, with Disk Drill being the most prominent exception. Recoverit does offer one killer extra feature and not much more than that: it can repair corrupted video files. If your goal is to recover a lost video from a family vacation or a similarly important event, then this feature alone might be enough to convince you to go with Recoverit instead of competing data recovery software applications.
Quality of recovered files may not be the same as that of the originals. Not all files can be previewed making it a bit hard to locate files to recover. The scan freezes on the Mac version, the remaining time indicator isn’t accurate.

After spending a lot of time with Wondershare Recoverit, we came to the conclusion that the data recovery software isn’t as great as some people (and reviewers in particular) make it out to be.
Don’t get us wrong: it’s not bad at all! It’s just that it didn’t really “wow” us in any way. While its user interface looks great, it lacks multiple basic usability features, and the application’s data recovery performance is average at best.
